Edgar Dyer was born in Brandon in 1906,(Thetford Q2-1906 4B:339), son of John and Anna Maria DYER (née NEWELL).

1911 census...Aged 5, he was at No.2 Foster Cottages, Bury Road, Brandon with his father John DYER [46] flint digger; his mother Annie [48] born Thetford; brothers William [19] coal labourer; Percy [14 errand boy and Bert [11]. All except his mother were born in Brandon.

Apparently another case of CWGC (or the Army) being given the wrong age (they had 38).

Edgar was one of six gunners assigned to SS "Norman Monarch" which was en route for UK with 6,300 tons of wheat, part of Convoy HX-126. At 04:53 on 20th May 1941 U-boat U-94 hit her with two torpedoes. She sunk at 56-41 N, 40-52 W. SS "Harpagus, the nominated rescue ship of the convoy picked up the master, 41 crew and 6 gunners. No one was lost then, but as the "Harpagus tried to regain the convoy, she was hit at 23:20 by torpedoes from U-boat U-109 and sank very quickly.This time 25 crew, 4 gunners, 3 passengers and 26 of the survivors from "Norman Monarch" were lost.
